Full range of business activities:
Heriot-Watt University is headquartered near Edinburgh in
Scotland. Whilst a modest overall size in comparison to other UK Universities, Heriot-Watt
has a strong reputation for research-led activities, particularly in science and engineering. The
University has developed a centre of excellence in photonics, which represents one of the
UK's largest and strongest centres in photonics research. In photonics research, there are 35
full-time academic positions, 60 postdoctoral researchers and 60 full-time PhD students.

Role in the project:
The University is a science provider to Helia Photonics Ltd. The
University will provide samples of prototype lenslet arrays and optical thin-film designs for
the enhancement of SPAD efficiency.

Qualification for these roles:
Heriot-Watt University has been a centre of excellence in
photonics for the last 25 years, taking a leading role in a number of European Commission
photonics consortia. Heriot-Watt has a particularly strong background in lenslet array design
and fabrication and design and fabrication in optical thin film multilayer structures. The team
have previous experience in constructing optical systems using this expertise for other
applications, eg. optical data interconnects, and will apply this knowledge to SPAD arrays for the first time.
